Eco-habits, donorship and cats: 8 stories about the ways to change the world
25-02-2020

On their third birthday, “Weekend” in Prospekt shopping mall decided to tell stories about kindness and convey the idea that humanity is an asset of Ukrainians. In Prospekt shopping mall they gathered to talk about how to change the world for the better in small steps and by their own example.
How Valeriia Honcharenko changed the eco-habits of the whole city:
«Three years ago, my husband and I went to celebrate my birthday to the Carpathians. I stood on the pass and looked at the river, completely littered with waste. It seemed that tons of plastic came down from the mountains. All my birthday I cried, thinking about how bad things are in our country.
I live in Vyshhorod region and once wrote a post on Facebook that I want to clean up in one particularly ugly place in our district. Five people came for cleaning. Later, four of them became co-founders of the ChystoVyshhorod public organization with me.
A year later, we became famous throughout Vyshhorod. Two years later, 73% of the city’s population are sorting waste. 20% have completely changed their consumer habits.
Of course, I became very recognizable, the team and I went to all the schools where 4600 children of the city study. We have developed special programs, and have created a cartoon “Sortui” for the smallest. Now, when I stand in line in the market, I see five people in front of me buying fruits and vegetables in their little bags!
Over the three years of work, we have implemented more than 30 environmental projects. We started from Vyshhorod, and now we are already working all over Ukraine, we are invited by mayors of other cities to share our experience. So, my hobby and desire to change something became my life.»
