Is it possible to draw a city and its inhabitants in a few minutes, do subway passengers and sellers on the market like being painted, how is Kyiv’s mood reflected in laconic sketches, and when a picture can reconcile friends?

Prospekt shopping mall invited 13 sketchers on the eve of the Artist's Day to find out how they highlight the key points, and remain free being alone with the city and with themselves. Urban sketching is a world movement of artists who make quick city sketches from nature. This is not an outdated cartoon genre and not a carefully traced portrait or landscape, but sketches that record time and place, telling a story.

“Sketching for an illustrator is like a work in a gym for an athlete,” the more you draw, the better you can. For those for whom drawing is not a job, this is a very pleasant pastime. You come back to your childhood, when you draw much and with pleasure. You can spend at least an hour alone with yourself, without being distracted with telephones and computers.
Kyiv is a perfect place for sketching. It is a very big city with diverse architecture and rich life. For example, in Kharkiv, urban-sketch artists paint in industrial areas, which cause in some people hostility. The sketchers can feel the city everywhere, “catch” its rhythm and see its beauty.
I’m a teacher of a sketch group “Maliunok na snidanok” (Drawing for breakfast), we usually meet early - at eight o’clock in the morning.
This is the first time that I was invited to draw in a shopping mall. Prospekt for me is like a bright patchwork consisting of pieces of multi-colored canvas. It is a perfect place to draw. There are a lot of people busy with different things and a lot of shops - each window tries to distinguish itself and to show the mood. A painter can immediately feel this mood and draw it. People at the food court are relaxed, they rest, sitting here for a long time - it is very convenient for an artist, you have time to draw.”
