City sketches with bright accents: 13 artists paint in Prospekt shopping mall
18-10-2018

Is it possible to draw a city and its inhabitants in a few minutes, do subway passengers and sellers on the market like being painted, how is Kyiv’s mood reflected in laconic sketches, and when a picture can reconcile friends?

Prospekt shopping mall invited 13 sketchers on the eve of the Artist's Day to find out how they highlight the key points, and remain free being alone with the city and with themselves. Urban sketching is a world movement of artists who make quick city sketches from nature. This is not an outdated cartoon genre and not a carefully traced portrait or landscape, but sketches that record time and place, telling a story.

“Earlier I thought that a person who wants to draw has to study academic drawing seriously and for a long time. Sketching is a philosophy that allows you to start at any time, without basic skills and special training. Just draw the world the way you see it. Therefore, for many people sketching means a high degree of freedom. Besides, it is associated with the modern rhythm of life and technology. Today we are mobile, our time is a valuable resource. To make a sketch you need just 15 minutes, it is not necessary to spend much time for it. I really liked to draw in Prospekt shopping mall, here there are such unusual architectural passages, curves, perspective unusual lines. When you draw in a certain place, it is important to grasp its specificity. The specificity of this place is the abundance of broken lines, moving stairs, refractions. So, if your task is to convey a mood of this shopping mall, in my opinion, you just need to catch these broken lines.
It's great that we had a tour around the mall. We saw that the building is well planned and thought, over, that visitors of the mall are well taken care of – a modern navigation is installed, innovative solutions are applied. For the artist the atrium and natural light of Prospekt provide cool shadows. Near the entrance on the first floor these shadows fall very nicely, they could be caught and portrayed.”
