Is it possible to draw a city and its inhabitants in a few minutes, do subway passengers and sellers on the market like being painted, how is Kyiv’s mood reflected in laconic sketches, and when a picture can reconcile friends?

Prospekt shopping mall invited 13 sketchers on the eve of the Artist's Day to find out how they highlight the key points, and remain free being alone with the city and with themselves. Urban sketching is a world movement of artists who make quick city sketches from nature. This is not an outdated cartoon genre and not a carefully traced portrait or landscape, but sketches that record time and place, telling a story.

“I draw since childhood. My Mom wanted me and my twin brother to draw, so when we were small, she gave us paints. We do not consider sketching to be a genre, it is rather an auxiliary exercise. You have to draw every day and sketching helps to set your eye and to train your hand.
You can make money on sketching, I have such experience. The other day it was reported on CNN that photographers are not allowed to visit some sessions of the US Supreme Court, while sketchers are. Surely, these sketchers earn money making their sketches for the media. Once there was a tendency to sketch fashion shows, and now this tendency comes back. Earlier the very fact that a person had computer skills and technical capabilities astonished. Now this does not surprise anyone, computer skills are perceived as a tool. Now we want to see something personal, and what could be more personal than drawing?
I like to draw everything except architecture which is not interesting to me. Some artists find human features in buildings, but I don’t see them yet. People, things are much more interesting to me. However, I liked to make sketches in Greece - there is a specific architecture there, which you really want to sketch. In Turkey, I did not have to pay for coffee when I was painting. I went to a cafe to make a sketch and left a drawing instead of money in the café. People in Turkey reacted touchingly. The owner of the restaurant was ready to entertain me in order I could stay in his restaurant, making sketches. The owner of another cafe asked me to draw something for his girlfriend who lives in London. He almost jumped like a child when I gave him the drawing. In Germany people often pay attention to sketchers, come to them and wish a good time.
If one or two sketchers make sketches in a city, problems rarely occur. My colleagues told me that once a large company of sketchers went to draw on the Bessarabian market and people there reacted aggressively, they even threw something. But I never witnessed such situations. Chess players who gather in Shevchenko Park are thick and tired of us: they constantly play chess, and large groups of sketchers come to draw them. But everyone is polite.
