City sketches with bright accents: 13 artists paint in Prospekt shopping mall
18-10-2018

Is it possible to draw a city and its inhabitants in a few minutes, do subway passengers and sellers on the market like being painted, how is Kyiv’s mood reflected in laconic sketches, and when a picture can reconcile friends?

Prospekt shopping mall invited 13 sketchers on the eve of the Artist's Day to find out how they highlight the key points, and remain free being alone with the city and with themselves. Urban sketching is a world movement of artists who make quick city sketches from nature. This is not an outdated cartoon genre and not a carefully traced portrait or landscape, but sketches that record time and place, telling a story.

Lera Bolkonska
“I've been drawing for about five years. I started with painting master-classes, something like “a picture in three hours.” Then I started to take lessons from artists. I set a goal to sell at the exhibition a book illustrated by me, to change my portfolio in order to work abroad and to find an art agent. Two years ago I learnt about UrbanSketchers group - this is an international trend that appeared in Ukraine. I joined the community because drawing together with other people is much cooler and more inspiring. A motivation appears; I see how other painters draw and what materials they use. Now I’ve changed my style of painting, at first it was a classical painting, now it is illustration, sketching, and other modern trends. Sketching is somewhat simpler, but somewhat more complicated than other styles. You need to catch something very bright immediately and to put accents. However, for the beginners, this style is easier, because you do not need to set big tasks immediately.
It is easier for me to draw at sea, and more difficult in the industrial areas, it may be difficult even to find what to draw there. It is also hard when there are many people around me, as far as I paint by myself, in this situation I feel shy. The easiest places to draw are a botanical garden, a pleasant cafe, a restaurant with a beautiful view of the street from the window.
In Prospekt shopping mall I liked escalators, interesting architectural rhythms, lighting and bright fences. I painted ArtMart store, because this is a store for artists, besides, I was attracted by the cats in the posters. I want to draw children on trampolines in FlyPark, because moving people are very interesting, there are a cheerful atmosphere and bright colors there.”
