How Irina Chmut listens to the military men:
«In summer 2017, I came to a volunteer station at the Central Railway Station, and joined its team. Nowadays, it is especially important for the military men to know that they are remembered, that people are grateful to them and always waiting for them.
The Ukrzaliznytsia’s administration has allocated a room for the military men — the former deputy hall. There are excellent conditions: it has left-luggage offices, a kitchen, a shower, a toilet and everything necessary. And there we are, volunteers. Our mission is specific, we provide immaterial help. The main thing we do is communicate. Not everyone succeeds in accepting this type of volunteering into their lives. I am very glad that we have a team of about 60 people. There are those who have been working at the station since its opening (since 2015) among us.
Those few material things that we invest in are tea, coffee, and sweets. We’ve collected a special library at the point — books written by the military men and volunteers.
Usually we take shifts a couple of times a week for several hours just to be with people who take care of our peaceful life. We need them to have someone to talk with, someone to pour out their souls to. Many of them suffered heavy losses. Of course, there are positive things: protecting us from difficult topics, the guys tell us jokes, some funny stories, treat us with sweets, boast of victories and successes, show photos.
Sometimes we are asked: “If we are not ready to be on duty, how can we help?” Bring tea, cream to coffee, cookies, sweets — these are always welcomed.»
