How Anna Shamalo refused from plastic:
«I’m sorting the garbage, trying to discard plastic and bags, reusing what I can. I’ve started this by myself, haven’t persuaded anyone, but gradually my husband has joined me, and then my parents have. And in time, even my grandparents began to try in some way to follow my example.
For example, my grandfather has been digging kitchen waste under a pine tree in the yard for several years. Once he planted two pine trees in the yard. The pine tree that he fertilized is already taller than a person’s height. The other has not grown to such height. My grandfather planted trees so that the children had a place to play, and so that cars couldn’t been parked on the lawn of the yard.
It seems to me that everyone has their own incentives in this process. For example, my father really likes to be praised. When he goes shopping with textile bags instead of packages, he receives a portion of praise and admiration from both the sellers and people in line. Now he claims: “I'm going to the market on the weekend, please sew me a larger bag!”
Gradually, you can find a replacement for many things and a way out of many situations. For example, I buy cereals by weight, for this I sewed special bags of tulle fabric. I take the meat in metal containers. Yes, several times I’ve received a rude refuse for a request to release goods into my container in large supermarkets. Therefore, I refused to make purchases in such places. However, the private business is calmly responding to such requests. I found an excellent butcher shop, where a whole family works. No questions arise, and I make my purchase there with pleasure.
In our family a trash can of 30 liters is filled in one and a half or two weeks. It’s hard for my husband to give up some habits. I started composting food waste, I plan to use it for growing flowers and herbs on the balcony.»
